Pikmin Bloom

Pikmin Bloom: Walk & Explore, co-developed by Niantic and Nintendo, transforms real-world walking into a location-based augmented reality experience. Built on Niantic’s real-world mapping platform, the app combines step tracking, AR exploration, and Nintendo’s Pikmin franchise to encourage daily physical activity. Rather than focusing on high-stakes competition, the application emphasizes wellness, outdoor exploration, and personal reflection.

The core game loop converts step count metrics directly into in-game progress. As players walk, their steps nurture Pikmin seedlings placed in their Planter Pack. Once grown, players pluck the Pikmin to join their walking squad. Feeding Pikmin collected fruit nectar produces glowing flowers on their heads, which can be harvested for petals. Players then scatter these petals on the real-world map while walking, leaving trails of blooming flowers that yield rare fruit and help giant map flowers bloom.

A key collection mechanic centers on "Decor Pikmin"—special variants that wear unique outfits corresponding to the real-world location (such as bakeries, train stations, parks, or museums) where their seedling was found. Additionally, the app features a daily "Lifelog" visual journal that aggregates total step counts, walked routes, and user-attached photos, serving as a personal memory calendar.

Pikmin Bloom offers a more relaxed experience. By removing fast-paced reflex mechanics, time-sensitive raids, and aggressive player-versus-player systems, it acts as a peaceful walking companion that subtly encourages healthy habits.
