The primary architectural component of Steam is the Steam Guard mobile authenticator. Designed to protect user accounts against unauthorized access and credential theft, the authenticator provides time-based two-factor authentication (2FA). Users can approve desktop client sign-ins using two methods: scanning an on-screen QR code generated by the Steam desktop client or tapping a one-touch push notification ("Approve" / "Deny"). This cryptographic challenge-response framework protects user accounts even if primary login passwords become compromised.

Beyond account security, Steam acts as a commerce safeguard. To protect virtual inventories, peer-to-peer item trading and Community Market listings require mobile confirmation. This prevents unauthorized item transfers in the event of account compromise.
