Most news apps are built to keep you scrolling. SmartNews, by its own description, is built around the opposite promises: get the article on screen faster, have it downloaded before you leave the house, end the daily briefing rather than extend it. Those promises sit oddly next to a 3.7 rating across 640,501 ratings — not the score of a weak product, but of one whose best ideas and most-complained-about behavior ship in the same install.

What it actually is

A news aggregator from SmartNews, Inc. with 50M+ installs, pulling headlines from what the listing describes as over 4,500 publisher partners — Reuters, AP, TIME and The Atlantic are named among them — into customizable topic channels, with localized editions for the US, Japan and other regions per the FAQ. Three features distinguish it: SmartView, a stripped-down article reader; “News From All Sides”, a slider showing how outlets across the political spectrum covered one story; and a Local tab built from GPS.

One framing point first, and it matters more than any feature note here. SmartNews positions itself as an “anti-echo chamber” aggregator delivering balance through “algorithmic neutrality”, and describes its curation as award-winning and as reducing the prevalence of extreme clickbait. SmartView is the reason we’d install it

One knock-on effect: cached articles have to live somewhere.

The notification problem

This is the most concrete criticism we can give you, and the likeliest reason an install doesn’t last. Frequent and sometimes repetitive push notifications are documented as a recurring issue, overwhelming unless carefully managed in settings, and published feedback describes switching off most alerts to make the app livable. We won’t speculate past what the material supports; the frustrations are real, they’re what users write about, and most are configurable.

How it compares

We won’t line SmartNews up against named rivals we haven’t assessed on the same terms. The contrast the listing itself draws is with social-media feeds, whose algorithms it describes as producing a filter bubble — again the developer’s framing, not our analysis. SmartNews is a well-featured aggregator with two standouts — SmartView and scheduled offline pre-fetch — plus local coverage deeper than most national apps attempt. The balance and neutrality story dominating its marketing is the developer’s own positioning: the comparison slider is a useful tool for seeing several outlets on one story, and whether it achieves balance isn’t something any outside review can certify. What weighs on it is ordinary and largely configurable — ads during reading, an aggressive notification default, storage that creeps up. Spend five minutes in settings on day one and there’s a fast, unusually local news app underneath; change nothing and the friction is what you’ll notice first.
