Overview

Endless runner games are shifting away from simple score chasers, adopting persistent worlds and RPG-like progression mechanics. Subway Surfers City, developed by SYBO Games, is the official next-generation follow-up to the legendary runner franchise. The project was originally started under the title Hoverboard Heroes by Boom 808 Studios, but SYBO eventually brought the game in-house and rebuilt it from scratch. Instead of the classic game's rotating world tour locations, this sequel is set in a permanent metropolis called Subway City. This urban map is split into unique, unlockable districts—such as DeLorean Park, Sunrise Blvd, The Docks, and Undertracks—each featuring its own distinct obstacles and visual identity.

The game introduces new, active traversal options that add depth to the traditional lane-shifting controls. Players can use the "Stomp" move to slam down onto the ground, smashing obstacles and opening hidden pathways to hard-to-reach "Secret Stars". The levels also feature high-speed Speed Pads, Bubblegum Shields that protect characters from crashes, and dynamic rail-grinding segments.

Subway Surfers City also adds an upgrade progression system for characters and boards. Players collect tokens to level up characters like Jake, Tricky, and Fresh, unlocking passive perks that boost score multipliers and item duration during competitive trials.

While players need an internet connection to submit scores to the competitive "Top Run" leaderboards, the core endless running and City Tour modes remain fully playable offline. The monetization design includes seasonal passes and key purchases for premium outfits, along with rewarded video ads to revive characters during difficult trials.
