The digital translation of traditional public-domain tabletop games requires developers to balance nostalgic rules with modern user interfaces. Ironjaw Studios’ Farkle adapts the classic high-stakes dice game, also known globally as Zilch, Zonk, Greed, or 10,000, for mobile devices. By automating math calculations and offering customizable rulesets, this app provides a clean, modern take on a centuries-old parlor game.

The game is played with six six-sided dice. On each turn, the player rolls all six dice and must set aside at least one scoring combination, such as single 1s (100 points), single 5s (50 points), or three-of-a-kind sets. The player then faces a classic risk-versus-reward decision: bank their earned points to secure their score, or roll the remaining dice to chase more points.

If a roll fails to produce any scoring combinations, the player "Farkles," immediately losing all points earned during that turn. However, if a player manages to score with all six dice, they earn "hot dice" status, allowing them to roll all six dice again and keep building their turn total.

Ironjaw Studios' version stands out by supporting popular custom rulesets, including options for Full Houses, Straights, and 4/5/6-of-a-kind multipliers. The physics engine and clean interface also make it an excellent educational tool for practicing basic arithmetic and probability estimation.

However, the user experience suffers from a high density of non-skippable advertisements that interrupt the flow of the game. Additionally, the app lacks a paid option to remove ads, which frustrates dedicated players. Some device-specific navigation bugs, such as the back button failing to close the app on older Android models, can also cause minor annoyance.
